Restoration Final Steps

Gilding with mica powders

Once all repairs were made, and background coloring done as a basis for gilding work, the final steps consist of matching the tones of the original "gilding".

Much of the original finish of this frame was done with substitutes for karat gold, and I will use those techniques for matching. The modern method is to use mica powders, which will not discolor over time the way traditional "bronzing powders" will. The final coloring will be built up in layers and combinations to reflect the age and condition of the rest of the frame.
